About Cynthia Howar

Cynthia Howar studied art and architecture in college but went on to become a lawyer and a consultant.  In 2004, she decided to get back to her artistic roots and immersed herself in watercolors by studying at the Art League of Alexandria, the Corcoran and with several visiting artists teaching workshops here and abroad.

While studying art and graphic arts in the 1970’s, all of her professors encouraged abstract painting. Today she has gone “back to the basics” and loves doing landscapes and figure drawing. Although starting to paint in oils and pastels, watercolor remains her favorite medium.

Recently juried into the Brandywine Valley Plein Air Competition for the fifth year in a row (October, 2015), her landscapes done on site at several Brandywine Valley landmarks were shown in Brandywine Valley Plein Air group show at the Tatnall School in Wilmington, Delaware. In 2013 she won an honorable mention for her piece, "Barn at the Farm of Jamie and Phyllis Wyatt". Her most recent show, “Paintings From Provence and Other Works of Art.”  was held at her studio in November 2011.

In April, 2007 she had her first one woman show at Long & Foster’s Foxhall office. She was accepted into her first juried show in 2004 with two watercolor landscapes at the Art League Gallery, Alexandria, Virginia, judged by Carlton Fletcher. Her watercolor “L’Avenue”, was accepted into the “Urban Life” October, 2005 all media show at the Art League Gallery, judged by Daniel B. Shay (138 accepted out of 429 entered).

Her oil painting “Blue Window” was accepted into the January 2006 show at the Art League Gallery and won an equal award. In 2006, her work was displayed in the  “Art in City Hall” show at the City Hall in Old Town Alexandria and “View from River Farm” was accepted in the November, 2006 Small Works show at the Art League Gallery. She travels to Europe with her watercolors and her new works are part of a series entitled, “Paris and Provence My Friends”.
